Parabens

Parabens are a group of chemicals (methyl-, ethyl-, propyl-, butylparaben) used as mild preservatives. They are used in products made under highly regulated conditions where a mild preservative is sufficient, or in combination with other, more allergenic, preservatives. Allergy to parabens is relatively rare compared with the other, more allergenic, preservatives.

Allergic reactions to parabens most often occur when products containing parabens are use on inflamed skin, for example, leg sores. Allergic reactions seldom occur when products with parabens are used on normal skin.

If you have been diagnosed with paraben allergy, you should avoid all products containing parabens. If a cosmetic product contains parabens, the chemical will appear in the list of ingredients under one of the following names:

methylparaben
ethylparaben
propylparaben
buylparaben
isopropylparaben
isobutylparaben
